The Warner Bros movie studio announced it is making new films based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

The new films will be based on the J.R.R. Tolkien novels set in the fictional world of Middle-earth.

A multi-year agreement had been reached between Warner Bros and Middle-earth Enterprises, who own the rights to the franchise.

The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was filmed in New Zealand in 2001. The films won 17 Oscars. The six films, directed by Sir Peter Jackson, hauled in more than US$6 billion at global box offices.

The Amazon streaming TV series released The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power last year. The first season was filmed in New Zealand, but production for future series was moved to the UK.
