Queenstown to get driverless buses

Queenstown has just made history with the launch of the country’s first-ever “autonomous shuttle” bus on an open public road.

This high-tech bus is called the Ohmio Lift shuttle, and it can carry up to 20 passengers at a time, using GPS technology to navigate its way around the city.

Developed by Auckland-based Ohmio Automotion, the shuttle is designed to be a “last-mile transport solution.” It’s perfect for city centers, where it can safely and efficiently transport people to their final destination.

The shuttle’s on-board technology is similar to an autonomous tram running on virtual tracks. The tracks are plotted on GPS, and if anything gets in the way, the shuttle stops automatically to avoid any accidents.

According to industry experts, this autonomous shuttle could play a vital role in making public transport more connected and accessible, especially for those who can’t walk, bike, or scoot to their destination. For example, tourists with luggage may find it difficult to walk to a bus stop, but the Ohmio Lift shuttle can pick them up right where they are.

Simon McManus, a representative of Intelligent Transport Systems New Zealand, says the shuttle takes the stress out of the journey and helps change behaviors. “It’s a novel solution that can make public transport more accessible and enjoyable for everyone,” he said.

So, the next time you’re in Queenstown, keep an eye out for the high-tech Ohmio Lift shuttle. It’s a game-changer for public transport in New Zealand!
