NASA has announced that it is going to test nuclear rockets to help speed up flying to Mars.

The US space agency believe they can develop nuclear thermal rocket engines. The plan is to have them in operation by 2027.

Scientists believe the new rockets could be three or more times more effective than the usual power source.

The increase in power will enable rockets to travel further and reduce travel time. The travel time issue is vital for human missions to Mars because longer trips need more supplies and robust systems, so faster rockets mean safer trips.

Currently a trip from Earth to Mars would take about seven months.
