Chris Hipkins has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The ceremony took place at Government House on Wednesday and officially completes the hand over from Jacinda Ardern.

Hipkins and deputy prime minister Carmel Sepuloni both took part in the swearing-in ceremony.

Chris Hipkins now becomes New Zealand’s 41st prime minister.

He also officially resigned his portfolios today – at least until next week when he will announce a reshuffle of his team.  However, currently Stuart Nash is acting Police Minister, Jan Tinetti covers Education, and Grant Robertson as Leader of the House and Public Service Minister.

Carmel Sepuloni is now officially Chris Hipkins’ deputy. Sepuloni is of Samoan, Tongan and NZ European descent. She is the MP for Kelston and has lived in Auckland since 1996.

She has strengths in education and has worked as a Literacy Educator with youth in West Auckland, teaching in Samoa, managing equity programmes at the University of Auckland, managing the non-regulated Pacific health research project and acting as CEO of New Zealand’s only national Pacific health provider, Vaka Tautua.
