The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature a reduced lineup of just 10 sports, with popular events like rugby sevens, hockey, and cricket left out.
Athletics and swimming are the only guaranteed sports, while others like netball, boxing, and track cycling made the final list. This scaled-back program, a cost-saving measure, comes after Scotland took over hosting duties from Victoria, Australia, which withdrew due to budget issues.
The Glasgow Games will also exclude other past favourites, including diving, badminton, beach volleyball, and table tennis. Instead, events will be hosted in just four venues across the city: Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena, and the Scottish Event Campus. Unlike previous Games, athletes and their teams will stay in hotels rather than a dedicated athletes’ village.
This change reflects efforts to manage costs while still bringing major sports to the Commonwealth stage. While some fans may miss seeing their favourite sports, the new lineup will ensure that the Games continue in a smaller, more sustainable format.
