New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt has won gold in the first race of the 2017 World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi.
She beat Great Britain’s Jodie Stimpson, in an epic sprint battle that came down to the wire. Third place went to Austria’s Sara Vilic.
Hewitt was solid in the swim and she broke away with the other podium athletes in the bike leg.
With 1km to go, Stimpson looked in control but Hewitt came back to produce a memorable finish.
Hewitt dedicated her win to her former fiancé, the late Laurent Vidal, who was honoured after his passing with the number one position in the same venue just one year ago.
