The Black Caps have lost the first Chappell-Hadlee One-Day-International against Australia in Sydney.
New Zealand were beaten by 68 runs after falling short of Australia’s 324.
Australia captain Steve Smith was pivotal in the game and was awarded man-of-the-match for his 164 runs with the bat and superb fielding efforts.
In reply Martin Guptil was the best New Zealand batter, scoring 114.
Smith’s 164 is the highest ODI score at the Sydney Cricket Ground, beating South Africa’s AB de Villiers record set in last year’s World Cup against the West Indies.
The second Chappell-Hadlee match is in Canberra on Tuesday.
